Preschool
Our bilingual preschool offers a stimulating and supportive learning environment for children aged three to five years. We offer two bilingual tracks; next to Portuguese you can decide between English or German. We nurture the innate fascination of children with the world to encourage learning.
ESB Rio de Janeiro
The curriculum is organised such that students spend
50 % of the time immersed in Portuguese and 50 % in German or English. The preschool building’s architecture was conceived to enable bilingual education through the immersion method. Therefore, each class frequents two classrooms, one for Portuguese and one for the language of the chosen track: English or German. This leads to a natural and authentic way to use the language in relation to the world, transforming students' surroundings into a bilingual environment. The children are accompanied by teachers and assistants who speak the languages of the classes corresponding to the chosen track.
In preschool, we emphasise learning through play and discovery with an inquiry-based focus that considers students' interests, taking advantage of the different school spaces. Inquiries are carried out in the two languages of the chosen track, which guarantees students the confidence to overcome challenges in both languages.
Children explore their immediate environment and learn how to find their place in a group, and in this way start developing an age-appropriate level of independence. Furthermore, they take part in activities and projects with other classes, and celebrate local and international festivals and traditions that promote awareness of and respect for other cultures. The classrooms are bright with a nice view of the national park Floresta da Tijuca, which creates an environment conducive to learning.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
Our bilingual preschool education combines the Brazilian curriculum with the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organization. The PYP is for children from preschool to Year 5. The PYP principles are aligned with the ESB Rio de Janeiro pedagogical proposal.
