We focus equally on academic and personal knowledge and skills. As an international community, our intention is that SIS students become global citizens with a strong sense of their origins.
Secondary School
After entering secondary school, our students are ready to start international language certificate preparations in various languages – English, German and French. We aim to achieve high academic standards and equip students with skills that allow them to thrive.
ESB Rio de Janeiro
The Brazilian curriculum – Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC) – is merged with the Middle Years Programme (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB). This results in our students undertaking classes across eight different fields of knowledge: Portuguese, foreign languages (English, German and French), mathematics, individuals and societies (geography, history, philosophy and sociology), science (biology, chemistry and physics), health and physical education, arts and design (IT and carpentry).
Initially, the students and their families choose one of the language tracks offered (English, German or French) in order to develop, together with Portuguese, a bilingual education. In Year 3, a third language is introduced as a foreign language. Later, in Year 6, a second foreign language is introduced (German for the English and French tracks and French for the German track), contributing to the development of an international mindset. In addition, students have the opportunity to prepare for language certificates.
Students develop several projects, putting into practice a number of skills acquired throughout their secondary school years. These skills involve time management, planning, critical thinking and transfer of learning, to name a few. As an IB World School, students develop the Community and Service Project during Year 9, in which they have the opportunity to make a difference in the community.
At the end of secondary school, our students are prepared to participate in classes in several languages in a natural way and enter ESB Rio de Janeiro College.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
The Brazilian curriculum – Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC) – is merged with the Middle Years Programme (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organization. MYP is the programme provided for Year 6 to Year 10. With an interdisciplinary approach, its framework makes connections between disciplines and encourages students to do the same between their studies and the real world.
