A healthy, performance-based approach is central to teaching and learning at SIS.
Primary School
At our primary school, students acquire high-level language skills. We promote awareness and respect for other people and cultures. We aim to empower students and give them a voice in their learning process.
Escola Nova by SIS
We support different families' necessities by offering our primary school education with different possibilities according to their needs: in shifts – morning or afternoon – or in a day school concept. Starting in 2024, the day school option offered to Year 1 students will be bilingual (English and Portuguese). In the following years, the bilingual educational concept will expand one year level at a time, always following the growth of that class.
We follow the Brazilian curriculum and we use different teaching and learning methods to encourage our students to identify and improve their own learning strategies. We focus on developing problem-solving, questioning and research skills based on real-life situations, enabling students to gain new knowledge and to help them deepen their understanding of what they have learned.
The primary students participate in various activities throughout the year, and in some of them, parents are invited to participate, such as the cultural fair and the science fair.
For Year 1 students who opt for bilingual day school education, literacy will be developed equally in both languages, English and Portuguese. The other classes and groups from the Year 1 morning and afternoon shifts have more time dedicated to learning English as a foreign language.
Starting in Year 2, Spanish is taught as a foreign language.
Bilingual Education at Escola Nova by SIS
At Escola Nova by SIS, children can learn both Portuguese as well as English through immersion – even if they are not native speakers of either language.
SIS applies the "One person, one language" principle. Teachers use the same language not only for teaching in the classroom but also in the school yard.
The immersion method exposes students to the rational, emotional, and cultural dimensions of the language. This is the foundation for developing complete fluency.
